About Jean

Jean is available for historical talks on two of Lincolnshire’s famous men, Sir Joseph Banks and Henry Winn. During the period she was Director of the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance she spent much of her time giving talks on the service and its benefits. Jean travelled across the county to promote and gather support making the charity one of the most popular in Lincolnshire. Jean has a natural talent for guest speaking at events.

Sir Joseph Banks

Sir Joseph Banks 1743 – 1820 was one of England’s most influential figures in the Georgian period.  He sailed with Capt. Cook on HMS Endeavour bringing together a team who collected plants, fish, birds, animals and insects as the ship sailed around the world.  He was a personal friend of King George III and with his patronage, he turned the leisure gardens at Kew into a scientific botanical garden which was famed across the world.  He was President of the Royal Society for 42 years and sponsored and promoted many scientific projects which influenced the development of countries across the globe.

Sir Joseph Banks was a scientific giant who spent his childhood roaming his fathers’ estate at Revesby.  Following his attendance at Harrow, Eton and finally Christ Church Oxford he inherited his father’s estates.  He developed a passion for the natural world but specialised in botany and much of his life was devoted to understanding and harnessing natural resources.

Sir Joseph was a gentleman with a reputation and influence that spanned the globe – yet he is a neglected figure in our history.

Guest talk subjects include:

  • Sir Joseph’s Life and Achievements
  • Sir Joseph on Endeavour
  • Sir Joseph at Revesby Abbey

    Henry Winn

Henry Winn was, during the Victorian period, a celebrity in Lincolnshire. The Stamford Mercury penned the headline “Henry Winn the Grand Old Man of Lincolnshire” in an article celebrating his 80th birthday. His poems and essays featured every aspect of life in the county and regularly appeared in newspapers. His knowledge relating to the history of the region was acclaimed across the country and he received many letters requesting information about the county.

Henry’s addiction to the pen resulted in a legacy of many manuscript books. During his 98 years he recorded changing social attitudes and improvements to both environmental conditions and facilities within communities during his life time.  He provides us with a word picture of daily life in a typical Victorian village – a peep into a past era that helped shape the 20th century.

    Guest talk subjects include:

    • Life in a Victorian Village
    • Henry Winn Poetry and Essays
